Myrtle Creek and Tri City Area Chamber of Commerce names its outstanding citizens of the year Saturday night at its annual banquet at the Elks Lodge.

The city of Myrtle Creek estimates it will save about $20,000 if it shuts off about half the lights in town, and it will all go to their street maintenance program. They say they will only shut off those in the middle of  city blocks.

The Tri City and Myrtle Creek Fire Departments were called to a house on Klimback Street, and thanks to the quick response, officials say the blaze was extinguished in about 10 minutes.

The road from Riddle to Myrtle Creek was packed with spectators Saturday night, waiting in anticipation of the annual Timber Truckers Light Parade. The annual trucker's light parade starts at D.R. Johnson Lumber Company in Riddle.

Motorcycle riders collected toys in southern Douglas County over the weekend. They were led by Santa himself, and Frosty the Snowman also joined in on a cool dry day. It was the 11th annual Un-organized South County Toy Run.

Hubert Weakley, 84, was found dead inside his travel trailer at the Rivers West trailer park in Myrtle Creek, Ore., after firefighters put out the blaze. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said an autopsy is planned but that there is no indication of foul play.

The City of Myrtle Creek had it's annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony on Saturday to kick off the holiday season in that community.

"No one should be alone for the holidays," is the motto of the Harvest Christian Assembly. Local churches and community volunteers banded together to feed about 300 people in Myrtle Creek on Thanksgiving Day.

In last week's KPIC Pet of the Week, we announced a contest to have viewers submit names for our new guinea pig. With over 200 names submitted, it was hard, but his name has been chosen: Tater. Two brothers from Myrtle Creek submitted the winner.

Two more people have been arrested by the Myrtle Creek Police Department in connection with the high speed chase this week, that started in Myrtle Creek and ended with a crash on Boomer Hill Road.

The Myrtle Creek Police, Douglas County Sheriff's officers and the Oregon State Police are trying to find two suspects after a high speed chase on Interstate 5 Tuesday afternoon.

An official from the Myrtle Creek Police department told KPIC Wednesday that one of the suspects involved in a high speed chase Tuesday afternoon was found in the general vicinity of where the suspect vehicle had crashed.

The county is moving ahead with a project in southern Douglas County that would give Myrtle Creek another freeway access point. Officials say most of the funding will come from the federal government.

Organizers of the Myrtle Creek Balloon Festival had to fight tough weather conditions this weekend and the balloons had to come down much sooner than they had anticipated.
