A man who claimed to have a bomb in his van with a 300-foot kill radius turned downtown Eugene into a ghost town for more than 4 hours Tuesday.

The driver in one of Eugene's deadliest car crashes has reached a settlement with his victims, as have two Eugene businesses that served the man alcohol the night of the crash.

The small sedan rammed the 10-year-old girl as she rode her bike down River Loop #1, knocking her to ground. The driver, Malcolm Gerlach, got out of the car, grabbed the girl by the hair, pulled her into his car and drove off. A year later, a judge sentenced him to 130 years in prison.

Judge Gregory Foote had harsh words for the two Eugene men convicted of beating Herbert Bishop, a homeless man, to death last May. "Mr. Bishop was a human being. He had worth. People cared about him.
